How to set up a Shopify contact form auto-reply (3 ways)

Shopify’s built-in contact form doesn’t send an auto-reply. When a customer submits it, Shopify emails the message to you, and the customer sees a short “thanks” on the page. Nothing lands in their inbox, so many customers aren’t sure it worked and write again, or email you directly.
You have three ways to add an automatic reply:
- An auto-responder in your email (free, but test it carefully).
- An app that adds an auto-reply to your existing form.
- A different form or helpdesk that confirms every message.
Below: how each works, what to write in the reply, and why the best fix is often to answer the question before the form is sent.
How the Shopify contact form works
The contact form on your theme’s contact page sends each message to the contact email in Settings → Store details → Contact information. The email arrives with a standard subject line that you can’t change, and contains the customer’s name, email and message.
Two things follow from this:
- There is no setting for a reply to the customer. It isn’t hidden somewhere in Notifications. It doesn’t exist for the theme contact form.
- Anything you build on your email side has to reply to the customer’s address, not to the address the notification was sent from. That’s the catch in option 1.
Option 1: An auto-responder in your email
If your store email is in Gmail, Google Workspace or Outlook, you can set up an automatic reply there.
Gmail or Google Workspace
- The vacation responder (Settings → General) replies to incoming emails automatically. It replies to the same sender at most once every four days.
- For a reply that only goes to contact form messages, you can save a template and create a filter that matches the contact form subject line and sends the template.
Outlook
- Automatic replies work like Gmail’s vacation responder.
- A rule can reply with a template to messages that match the contact form subject.
The catch: automatic replies don’t always go where a normal reply would. Depending on your email provider, they can be sent to the technical sender of the message, which for contact form emails may be Shopify’s mail system, not your customer. Before relying on it, submit your own contact form with a different email address and check that the auto-reply arrives there.
Good for: small stores that want a free fix and are happy to test it. Not good for: stores that also use the same inbox for suppliers and everything else, because a vacation responder replies to them too.
Option 2: An app for your existing form
Several Shopify apps add an auto-reply to the contact form. Some work with your theme’s existing form and send the reply to the address the customer typed in. Others replace the form with their own, with fields like order number, topic and file upload. Search the Shopify App Store for “contact form auto reply” and check:
- whether it works with your existing form or replaces it,
- whether you can edit the reply text and sender name,
- whether replies come from your own email address (better for trust and spam filters),
- the price and recent reviews.
Good for: stores that want a reliable confirmation without changing how they handle email.
Option 3: A form or helpdesk that confirms every message
Helpdesk tools and form builders usually send an automatic confirmation, often with a ticket number, as part of their setup. If you already use one, or plan to, connect your contact page to it and the auto-reply comes with it.
Good for: stores with enough messages that they need tickets, assignees and shared replies anyway.
What to write in your auto-reply
An auto-reply should do three things: confirm the message arrived, say when you’ll answer, and give the answers customers can get right now. Keep it short.
Everyday auto-reply
Hi there, thanks for your message! We’ve received it and will reply within [1 business day].
Looking for a quick answer?
- Track your order: [link]
- Shipping times and returns: [FAQ link]
If your message is about an existing order and you didn’t include the order number, just reply with it, and we’ll get to it faster.
[Your name], [Store name]
Busy periods (sales, holidays)
Hi there, thanks for getting in touch! Because of our [sale / the holidays], replies are taking up to [48 hours]. You can track your order here: [link], and most questions about shipping, returns and discount codes are answered here: [FAQ link]. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
Avoid “Do not reply to this email.” If a customer replies with more details, that reply should reach you.
Better than an auto-reply: answer before the form
An auto-reply makes a message feel received. It doesn’t make it unnecessary. Most contact form messages are about order status, changes, returns and shipping, and each has a faster answer than an email:
- Ask for the topic first. If the customer picks “Where is my order?”, show order tracking instead of the form. If they pick “Returns”, show the return policy and how to start a return.
- Show matching FAQ answers. Customers who find the answer don’t send the message.
- Ask for the order number up front. It saves one round of emails on almost every order question.
- Make it reachable from every page. Customers shouldn’t have to find a contact page to get help.
This is how HelpDock works: a help widget on every page of your store where customers search your FAQ, look up their order with the order number and email, and, if you allow it, cancel, change or return an order themselves. If they still need you, they pick a topic and send a message, which arrives as a ticket with the topic and order attached. The customer sees a confirmation on screen. HelpDock doesn’t send an auto-reply email, so if you want one in the customer’s inbox, combine it with one of the options above.

- Add topics and an order number field to your contact form.
- Show answers and order tracking before the form.
Quick answers
Does the Shopify contact form send an automatic reply?
No. The built-in contact form sends the customer’s message to your store’s contact email, but it doesn’t send anything back to the customer. To confirm the message arrived, you need an app, a different form tool or an auto-responder in your email.
Where do Shopify contact form messages go?
To the contact email in your store details (Settings → Store details → Contact information). If you change that address, new contact form messages go to the new one.
Can I use the Gmail vacation responder as a contact form auto-reply?
Sometimes, but test it first. Automatic replies can go to the address the email was technically sent from, which may be Shopify’s mail system rather than the customer. Gmail also sends a vacation reply to the same sender at most once every four days.
What should a contact form auto-reply say?
That the message arrived, when you will reply, and links to the answers customers can get right away: order tracking, your FAQ and your return policy. Keep it short and human.
